Black America doesn’t have to shop at Walmart

Let’s be clear: Walmart needs Black America a heck of a lot more than Black America needs Walmart.

Wielding roughly $1.8 trillion in spending power this year, Black folks’ economic clout is undeniable. We get to choose where we spend our hard-earned cash during the holiday shopping season and beyond.

But Walmart — one of many companies that made lofty promises about fighting systemic racism after George Floyd’s murder — just pulled the plug on its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Now, three weeks after Donald Trump’s election, they claim they want to be “a Walmart for everyone.” And the anti-woke bros on the right are trading high-fives, claiming they forced the retail giant to abandon its DEI initiatives.

Yes, DEI, the root of all so-called reverse racism in America. Because for some folks in this nation, DEI is code for anything that gives the appearance of supporting Black people, communities or businesses.

It’s not that Black people thought the post-George-Floyd-murder racial reckoning would last forever. Our ancestors lived through Reconstruction, so we know better.

But back on June 12, 2020, just days after Floyd’s murder, Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon emoted in a blog post about how the company’s goal was “to help replace the structures of systemic racism, and build in their place frameworks of equity and justice that solidify our commitment to the belief that, without question, Black Lives Matter.”

McMillon pledged to examine every aspect of Walmart to ensure the company was prejudice-free. He waxed poetic about a conversation he had with a Black female employee about racial microaggressions. He pledged $100 million to a Center for Racial Equity that would “address the root causes of gaps in outcomes experienced by Black and African American people in education, health, finance and criminal justice systems,” according to Walmart’s website. Walmart, he vowed, was on a “journey in support of racial justice and equity.”

One thousand, six hundred twenty-eight days later, that journey is over.

The Center for Racial Equity? Closing. Racial equity training for employees? Not today, Satan. Using the phrase “DEI” in corporate communications? Axed.

Walmart now says it wants to foster “a sense of belonging.” Apparently, as journalist Judd Legum quipped on Bluesky, “Walmart has solved racism.”

Right-wing anti-DEI activists like Robby Starbuck are popping champagne, claiming they pressured the company into ditching its “woke” policies. Starbuck, a former music video director, regularly posts lines like “It’s a fact that DEI is antiwhite,” and “DEI IS racism and deserves to die,” on X.

In a lengthy post on the social media platform, Starbuck insinuated that his conversations with Walmart — the nation’s biggest, most influential retailer — led to this rollback, a move that will “send shockwaves throughout corporate America.”

Walmart touts itself as Black America’s biggest private employer and has long been a retail giant in the Black community. A 2023 analysis by Collage Group identified Walmart as our favorite brand, due to the company’s investments “in Black enrichment, and taking a stance on social matters.”

But here’s the other side of the coin: research revealed that Walmart stores in Black and Latino neighborhoods consistently get worse reviews for service quality. Walmart’s been hit with multiple discrimination lawsuits. Remember that $17.5 million class-action lawsuit? Yeah, the 2009 one where Walmart settled claims that it discriminated against Black people trying to get truck driving jobs? That was a thing.

Just two years ago, an Oregon jury ordered Walmart to pay $4.4 million to a Black man after a white Walmart employee racially profiled and harassed him in one of their stores. A quick internet search nets plenty of other examples of people suing Walmart over shopping while Black experiences, Black employees suing for being repeatedly passed over for promotions, and Black employees suing because they were being called racial slurs in the workplace.

Let’s call Walmart’s abandoning DEI efforts what it is: a slap in the face to the Black folks who’ve kept its registers ringing for decades. A company that caves to racist attacks coded as “anti-woke” does not respect Black America.

Good Bye Walmart

We've always been treated like second-class citizens because that's how the system was constructed to treat us and Whites always thought they were superior to everyone human race. It just sickens and disheartens me! As far as Walmart, I haven't even shopped there in like 2 months now and this sentiment echos the realities that Walmart has always been a racist country and I was not aware of this until I heard about DEI initiatives being stripped from their policy and highly doubt it will ever been an all-inclusive company, especially for workers. It was founded in Arkansas, which is a very racist state, so Walmart is indeed a racist company as we know it and as a Black man, I no longer shop there.

Okay, like someone else said, what is the alternative? There's a food shortage as is so sometimes you have to go to several places to get groceries and other items. Most businesses we give our money to don't like us anyway so where do you go? People who have no choice but to shop at Walmart because it's the only grocery store near them and everyone doesn't have a car or a lot of options. I don't think we should judge those who still need to shop at Walmart. Just saying. Maybe we need to collectively build our own grocery store chains and give them some competition if we can come together as a group and as a people maybe then we can make a difference and have more choices. Until then people have to feed their families.

Personally, I prefer shopping at the Dollar stores.

The term reverse racism is incorrect. The implication is that when it's not being directed against people of color that it is wrong.

Will not get another hard earned black dollar from me or my family.

In my own honest opinion it’s not just racist Walmart it’s all walks of life. They way our money but they’re not willing to support us NO this is nothing new. It would be nice if we could come together and build our own. And that includes everything we need to live. Let’s get it together. We can do this!!!!

Stop thinking race and start thinking strategy. Racism is nothing but a strategy to stay number one. The black community should analyze how they are using this strategy, then plan and execute a new way to succeed against racism. Why do we (black people) think the number one team is supposed to give you their playbook? We need a playback, but will the black community use it?

Mannn, I get all this. It all makes alot of sense. BUT! Then what? Shop with what other grocer? What white ran grocery store appreciates our
money? Aren't allll grocery stores that give you the convenience of walking in and pretty much be able to get whatever you may need for your home inside and out ran by them? In what state is there a grocery store like that own by us? I've never googled that but I'd guess that there isn't 1! Shame on us not them! But with that being said I don't even believe that even something that's possible in our community. Only thing possible in our community is becoming a victim of some type of crime, but I digress... I DONT BELIEVE WE WILL EVER UNDERSTAND HOW STRONG we ARE NOT COULD BE IF ATLEAST 50% REALLY COME TOGETHER!

Just left Walmart using their ATM machine. Looking around at all these black people carts full of groceries shaking my head and wondering do they even know what Walmart has planned for them. It made me sick! We need to spread the threat and Boycott this giant!!!! Now!!!!

Understand White Supremacy/Racism and become conscious! It stands firmly upon 2 pillars. LIE & DECEIT! RACISM must be destroyed and replaced with a system of justice in every area of people activity. Engage only in constructive activity. Think, speak, and act in such a way as to produce and propagate. Expose this vampiric dynamic at every turn.Walmart is exposed like Nosferatu in sunlight.Go beyond plain woke.Become conscious.

The best boycott is to keep your money in your pocket. Wal-Mart isn't the only retailer who is afraid of the Wash DC regime change and kicks our community money to the curb. We'll see other retailers and big businesses do the same. In the meantime, find local small businesses who appreciate your money and leave the big boys alone. Keep your wallets closed until then. Easy thing to do.

Goodbye Walmart.

I am in total agreement with you. I too will stop shopping at Walmart in protest to this reversal of diversity equity and inclusion betrayal on the part of Walmart. It’s been time for the black culture to put our resources together and have our own stores banks etc.

What in the hell, everybody shops at walmart

Many are removing DEI from their walls and operational procedures. Governments are also removing DEI from their procedures. We are back to the 60s heading backward to the 30s. Time to call for a national boycott of these businesses that practice racism. Time to organize and become more politically savvy.

This is what it have to take that we as blacks have to stick together and build our own big corporations getting richer and richer and we keep getting treated like we ain't nothing for the love of God let's do this

Where are our black organizations in this. They should be calling for a national boycott of Walmart!

yes let's SERIOUSLY BOYCOTT WALMART. And ANY OTHER BUSINESS OR PERSON. WHO IS OR SEEMS TO BE A RACIST. OUR VOICE HAS TO BE HEARD. AND WE HAVE TO SHOW OUR WORTH AND VALUE AS PEOPLE AND COSUMERS. SHOW THE STRENGTH OF OUR DOLLARS AND CENTS.

I’m totally with showing Walmart my dollars don’t go to a store that’s support the bias racist practices. Keep in mind DEI was created because there was never equal employment for blacks in America. So please stop with the fake so the fake fair for all people. When blacks have never been treated fair in employment and everything else. And we have the receipts

Why as a Black, Brown and Mulatto community suddenly feel or get upset concerning these petty episodes. Racism has always been in existence. Continued talk about getting together and discussing our (differences), will never take place because of our differences. Lastly, there has to be a united front before Black, Brown and Mulatto communities can move forward (which involves trust and trust is not working within), most definitely will not work without.

I am not one bit surprised at Walmart standing with their own. Black People get ready for the rollback where Walmart outright showed racist behaviors toward their Bkack employees. This is shameful, we keep losing our love ones because of racism and yet; we are expected to keep these racist corporations alive in our communities. We as Black People must realize our worth, not just spending but our abilities and build our own corporations that we know will support our communities. Instead of trying so hard to be accepted by people that will NEVER see our worth, let's value ourselves and one another and show our children who we really are as a People. DEI is a joke, we are very talented, intelligent, innovative, and determined People. So, let's take all of our money making skills and make money for ourselves and cut out the RACIST CANCERS that use our talents like they did our ancestors to get and remain rich. Without us, their money will dry up because they need the government more than we do. Black Power ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

It would be great if we really had that power as black consumers but let’s be real corporations are run mostly white America mostly men what other retailers black people can shop? There are hardly any black owned businesses and corporations in this country that give us real power to stand on our own to be self sufficient. The system is design to keep black people as consumers rather than producers. Black peoples have served this country for 400 years and build this country off free labor through slavery. We are not allowed to buy property that could benefit us because the white owned banks control the money. The black people who do have money buy clothes jewelry cars and sneakers instead of investing back into the black communities around the country sure there are some black people giving back but that’s not enough. 42 million black people in America they say that’s simple then every wealthy black person give 1 million dollars each to a 42 million dollar fund for every back American in this country. We have black entertainers, entrepreneurs and professional athletes making that kind of money we can help ourselves build our own retail stores.
