UMES, Southern winners Thursday

Maryland Eastern Shore, above, gave HBCU teams three consecutive postseason wins after defeating Wake Forest 59-48 in the first round of the WNIT Thursday night. Down 48-45 in the fourth, the Hawks reeled off 14 straight points to end the game and earn the first tournament win in program history.
Desi Taylor tied with a game-high 19 points, while teammate Kaliya Perry recorded a double-double 16 points and 12 rebounds plus four steals. UMES advances to face Youngstown State March 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Southern Makes it Four
The Jaguars extended the HBCU streak to four straight wins with a 65-53 win over Samford in the NCAA First Four. Southern won its First Four game last season. You’d think the selection committee would get a clue.
The Jaguars’ defense held Samford to just nine points in the fourth quarter. Jaylia Reed scored a team-high 16 points, and teammate DeMya Porter added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. For their win, Southern gets No. 1-seed South Carolina on Saturday.
