Norfolk State is the three-time defending MEAC champion.

Two familiar foes in MEAC championship

The Bison are back for their sixth straight MEAC Tournament final after defeating Coppin State, 65-50. Freshman guard Ariella Henigan scored a career-high 22 points. “I just wanted to remain calm out there,” Henigan said. “This is bigger than a regular season and a lot is on the line.”

Howard will face Norfolk State, in a rematch of the last five championships. The Spartans defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 60-51. Jasha Clinton was an all-around performer for NSU with 19 points, four steals, three assists, two rebounds and one block.

The championship is Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPNews.

WSSU advances in Atlantic Region Tournament

Winston-Salem State defeated Glenville State, 88-71, in the Atlantic Regional quarterfinals.

Nevaeh Farmer led the Rams (27-3) with 22 points, followed by Maia Charles with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Makayla Waleed chipped in with 15 points.

The Rams went 33 of 77 from the field, 13-for-30 from 3-point range, and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line, grabbed 43 rebounds, forced 20 turnovers, scored 32 points in the paint, and had 14 steals.  The No. 3 Rams will take on either No. 2-seed Gannon or No. 7-seed Edinboro Saturday at 5 p.m.

Southern upsets AAMU in SWAC Tournament

Friday the 13th was unlucky for Alabama A&M women’s basketball. The Bulldogs had their 18-gam conference win streak snapped by Southern, 51-49, in the SWAC Tournament semifinal on a last-second basket.

The Jaguars advance to Saturday’s championship game against either Alabama State or Arkansas-Pine Bluff. AAMU’s season is not over, however. By virtue of winning the regular season title, the team earns an automatic bid to the WNIT.
