In addition, DSA's middle school team also earned second place in the state with excellent ratings in Jazz/Hip-Hop and Contemporary/Lyrical categories.

Four Durham Public Schools magnet programs have just been identified as among the best in the nation by Magnet Schools of America.

Lakewood Montessori Middle School, The School for Creative Studies, Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet Elementary and Holt Elementary Language Academy all received awards for 2018. Lakewood earned the prestigious Magnet School of Excellence designation, and The School for Creative Studies, Club Boulevard and Holt were deemed Magnet Schools of Distinction. Magnet School of Excellence is the highest category of award bestowed by Magnet Schools of America.

Lakewood encourages students to become independent thinkers, engaged learners and positive contributors by showing responsibility for each other and the world around them. It is a community where students grow academically and socially through the mastery of real life skills and knowledge.

As a humanities magnet elementary school, Club Boulevard is a place where all students grow from appreciating many voices, celebrating the arts, connecting learning to the world, and continuous immersion in the humanities.

Holt is both a year-round calendar and program magnet school. All students study an additional language (Spanish or Mandarin Chinese) beginning in kindergarten, and global cultures are integrated into the core curriculum for greater understanding of the world and its people.

The School for Creative Studies focuses on developing students into observant, resourceful, and adaptable problem solvers using applied creativity, media, design and communication arts.
