St. Aug's vs. Shaw

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 12:00:00 am

Traffic was murder trying to get here.

St. Augustine's came out fired up. Falcons led by as much as 13 points. You know the women haven't beaten Shaw since 2010. Margaret Richards swept Jacques Curtis that season. It's still being talked about.

Now in third period. Shaw has reversed the 13-point deficit into a three-point lead with just under 7 minutes left.

Kelsey Arnold has 10 points for the Falcons while no Shaw player is in double figures,=.

Kaaliya Williams' three-point play pulls Falcons to within two but Klintisha Martin's outback makes it a four-point Shaw lead.

And we have a game folks. Falcons erase a double-digit, third-quarter lead to tie the game heading into the fourth period.

Newcomer Tahniya Sweatt hits one free throw to give Bears a 47-44 lead with 7:29 left in game. Sweatt has a team-high nine points. But a steal by Williams pulls Falcons to within one.

Falcons have retaken the lead on Williams layup and free throw gives SAU a 51-49 lead with 5:21 lead. What a second half!

Got to give the Falcons credit for coming back. They looked dead in the water in third period. Angela Caraballo's layup gives SAU a four-point lead with 4 minutes left.

Shaw's Lerve Johnson-Tyler just had three cutbacks to tie the game at 53 with 2:52 left.

Another putback by Johnson-Tyler to give Shaw the lead, but here come the Falcons. Kiana Clark nails a 3-pointer and SAU leads 58-57 with 1:17 left.

Sweatt with a running layup and Shaw has a one-point lead. Kamya Renwicks' layup just rolls off the rim and Sweatt gets the rebound. Fouled. At the line with 34.6 seconds left. Misses front end of a 1 and 1.

Falcons miss shot but finally get a rebound by Raquel Kellow. Fouled. Makes first. No pressure. Game tied. Makes second. SAU leads 60-59 with 16.2 seconds left.

Fouled called Johnson-Tyler. Quiera Gilmore at the line with 8.5 seconds left and Falcons up by one. Misses one. Makes second. Falcons win 61-59!!!

I was teasing SID Anthony Jeffries that Shaw center LaQuisha Taylor didn't play because of injury and that was the difference. He said, "As many beatdowns as we've gotten over the last eight years, I don't care!!"

Kaaliya Williams finished with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Kelsee Arnold added 14. Shaw out rebounded SAU 50-39 but it didn't matter.

Now let's see what the men got.

Quincy January gets his first dunk at the 13:10 mark in the first half. Falcons lead 8-5 with seven straight points.

Low-scoring and boring half. But so were the women at first. We shall see. Falcons lead 14-9 with 6:53 left in half.

Dunk count: January 2, Shaw 0

Halftime: Falcons 24, Shaw 19. YAWN!!!

No player is in double figures. January has 10 rebounds.

Shaw has come out and scored the first four points to trail by one.

At this rate, the women will score more point than the men. 34-29 SAU with 10 minutes left.

Shaw and Johnson C. Smith are tied for first in the Southern Division. St. Aug's and Livingstone are in second place.

DeAngelo Stephens-Bell gives Shaw its first lead of the half, 38-36, with 7:24 left. Savon Goodman makes it four points before a three by Ishmael Baldwin.

Foul called on St. Aug's Kasey Bryant. But Krishaun Myers misses both free throws. 40-39 Shaw with 6:45 left.

Crunch time. Shaw leads 43-41 with 3:22 left

Stephens-Bell sweet short jumper makes it 45-41 with 2:48 left. Shaw dominating the boards, too.

Bryant nails a trey and it's back to one with 1:53 left. Cameron Golden Sr. hits a long two and it's back to three with 1:24 left. Fans are starting to perk up a little.

Khaliq Williams barely gets his hand on a rebound and tips it in to give Bears a 50-46 lead with 43.2 seconds. Krishaun Myers misses front end of 1 and 1 to increase lead. Bryant at the line. Makes 1. Makes 2. 50-48 Shaw with 27.6 seconds.

Golden at the line. Another missed front end. Shaw shooting 31 percent from charity stripe. January at line to tie game with 19 seconds left. Misses 1. Time out Shaw. Falcons are 5 of 17 from line. Misses both.

Khaliq is fouled. At line. Makes 1. Makes 2. Four-point lead with 17 seconds left. Falcons miss two shots and Shaw gets the ball with 6.8 seconds left. Bears going to win this one. Ugly win but a win nevertheless.
