Eagles get top billing

Hopefully, Jerry Mack is not superstitious. North Carolina Central was never ranked preseason No. 1 in his first three seasons, yet the Eagles finished with either a share of the MEAC championship or the outright title last season.

NCCU was voted No. 1 Friday at the MEAC Football Media Day. The Eagles garnered 13 first-place votes to double second-place North Carolina A&T’s five. Does it need saying – AGAIN – that Mack is 3-0 against the Aggies. Hampton got one first-place vote and, ironically, Delaware State, which was voted to finish last, also got a vote. Must have been the coach. Oh well, if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?

The preseason list:

  1. NCCU
  2. N.C. A&T
  3. S.C. State
  4. Bethune-Cookman
  5. Hampton
  6. Florida A&M
  7. Norfolk State
  8. Morgan State
  9. Howard
  10. Savannah State
  11. DSU

New sheriff in town: North Carolina Central fans will get their first chance to interview new women’s basketball coach Trisha Stafford-Odom on Aug. 9 at Rookie’s Sports Bar in Durham. Stafford-Odom replaces Vanessa Taylor, whose contract was not renewed. Taylor is now an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina. Fans can get an unlimited pizza buffet for $9.99 plus tax. Stafford-Odom coached for three seasons at Concordia University Irvine from 2013-16. Rookie’s is located at 4911 Central Park Drive, just off Miami Boulevard near I-40.

CIAA TV: Three CIAA football games will be broadcast on Aspire TV this fall: Virginia State vs. Bowie State on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.; Virginia Union vs. Virginia State on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.; and the CIAA Football Championship on Nov. 11.

New gig: Kerrick Jackson has been named Southern’s head baseball coach. But here’s the thing: Jackson was previously a professional sports agent. Think the Southern job has a little more stability to it?

Robinson Stadium: The completion of the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium is set for Aug. 25. Crews are installing a new turf, a retaining wall and drainage system, Cushdrain Shock Pad and a new scoreboard that will light up with the letter “G.” If only the Coach could have seen all this.
