Sports news & notes 6/1

Two HBCU baseball teams are heading for the NCAA Tournament.

Bethune-Cookman will stay close to home to compete in the Gainesville Regional. The Wildcats meet South Florida in a double-elimination on Friday at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale at www.FloridaGators.com/tickets.

Texas Southern will represent the SWAC in the Baton Rouge Regional. The Tigers will take on No. 4 seed LSU Friday at 3:30 p.m.

In case you missed the news, Grambling State last month announced a major renovation project to the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium. It will be the first upgrade in decades – DECADES. Included in the $2 million overhaul is a high-tech digital scoreboard and a completely new turf football field. The completion date is mid-August, just in time for the G-Men’s first home game on Sept. 9. That’s cutting it close, folks.

“I haven’t been here long, but I’ve heard loud and clear from our alumni, students and all of GSU fans and stakeholders that this is long overdue,” Athletics Director Paul Bryant said. “There’s no time like the present, and it’s time to make this happen.”

See what winning will do for your program? Take a clue the rest of you.

And speaking of football – it’s already June – the SWAC Football Media Day is July 14 at the Birmingham Marriott. And, for once in a long while, all 10 coaches are returnees.

For those of you who just can’t wait till the season starts, my friend and colleague Eric Moore has composed his annual HBCU football schedule. There are a few missing schools on CP time, but check out what Eric has done so far at http://onnidan2.com.

Another friend and colleague, Lut Williams, recently published an outstanding three-part series on HBCUs basketball players who leave for “greener pastures” that are not always so green.

Read “Traveling Men,” part 1, here.

Part 2, here.

I’m still looking for part 3.
