The Voice of the Black Community

Why are you inviting the police when the goal is to protect people from police?

Do these idiots realize the whole point of brake light clinics is to protect communities that are targeted by police for harassment and violence? They're truly the dumbest morons to involve the police in this.

It appears the author was not aware of the fact that brake light clinics are a thing that DSA has been doing locally since last year. It is uninformed at best, disingenuous at worst to not give credit to the Democratic Socialists for this particular action. It's also concerning that they're including police, which will dissuade the people who need it most. This action was endeavored upon as a matter of preventing cold-blooded murder of black men and women at the hands of police by preventing unnecessary interaction. This flies in the face of that, and there are many who'd likely be understandably wary of this for that very reason. At the very least, please amend this piece to reflect that brake light clinics have been done by DSA and YDSA chapters in Carrboro and Raleigh. It's great to have more happening, but news organizations have been covering these actions while actively avoiding mentioning the organization that originated it. Simply googling "brake light clinic" offers a great snapshot of how these (and other forms of harm reduction and prevention) are happening across the US.
