St.Aug's vs. Shaw basketball - 1/25

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 12:00:00 am

Of course, you know the line outside Emergy gymnasium was longer than New Bern Avenue. And baby it's cold outisde. Coach Rachel Bullard has never been Jacques Curtis, but the Falcons are on fire from outside.  Lead Shaw 10-6 early on. Two 3-pointers included. Remember, St. Aug's has just 2 seniors on the team.

Ariel Hatcher hits a 3 to make it 12-9 Falcons. Kaleisha Moore, a Southeast Raleigh High graduate, hits 1 of 2 FTs. SAC leads 13-9. One of SAC's 2 seniors Ebony Spencer just made a great block. Bullard has joined the braid family. Wearing long microbraids. Look nice. Falcons fighting for every rebound, every loose ball. Porscha Walton just made a fake like she was dishing the ball off but kept it instead and made the layup and FT for a 3-pt play. SAC leads 16-9 with 13:04 left in 1st.

Hatcher cools the momentum with a muscle layup. Diamond Mitchell makes it 2 straight for Shaw which pulls to within 3 before Spencer makes a layup for a 5-pt lead again. Brittany Allen makes it a 7-pt lead before Hatcher's pretty 3-pter cuts it to 4.

Both teams are trading baskets now. Good game so far. Shaw is tied with Fayetteville State for the division lead. Falcons and Winston-Salem are a game behind. Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone are winless in the division. Mitchell is starting to heat up. Has 6 pts after another jumper. Shaw trails by 3. Falcons need to hit their FTs. Spencer just missed 2 straight.

Brittany Henry's putback pulls Shaw to 1, but Walton nails a 3. Kaula Jack's putback ties the game 26 with 7:22 left in the 1st. Shaw starting to take control of the game. Terri Jacobs muscles in a layup to put SAC back up. Very entertaining game before this packed but quiet house.

Jack ties the game with a steal and layup.

Regime McCombs breaks the tie with a 3. Falcons miss another front end of 1 and 1. Allen's putbacks makes it a 5-0 Falcons run for 33-28 lead. And look at this, Curtis calls a timeout with his team BEHIND! Go figure.

Bryann Guyton scores her first basket of the game. And she scores her second to pull Shaw to within 1 with 2:23 left in 1st. Mitchell's layup gives Bears a 1-pt lead. Shaw has 6-0 run going.

Halftime: Shaw 34, SAC 33. Bullard is going to cringe when she sees all those misses FTs. Falcons shot just 37.5 from the charity stripe.

Now it's the Bears getting the loose balls in the second half. Lead by 3. Falcons miss 2 more FTs. Now 3 for 10; that's 7 pts. Meanwhile, Shaw is heating up from outside. Lead 38-33. McCombs breaks the drought with a 3 to trail by 2. Bullards substitutes entire 5 and reads them the riot act.

Jeanne-Marie Wilson ties the game with a putback. Both teams cold from the field. Falcons miss 2 more FTs. Should be ahead by 8 instead of tied.

Burwell's layup gives Shaw back th lead with 13:55 left. Victoria Davis breakaway layup ties the game again. Ooooh, this is good!!

McCombs gives Falcons back the lead, btut Nicole Dias ties the game again. Walton hits 1 of 2 FTs. Falcons lead by 1.

Mitchell gives Shaw back the lead. Falcons SID Anthony Jeffries says SAC women haven't defeated Shaw since Feb. 2010.

Mitchell gives Bears 3-pt lead. Mitchell scores her sixth straight point and is fouled but misses FT. Shaw leads 50-45 with 8:06 left. Walton breaks the streak with a short jumper but Hatcher hits a turnaround. Burwell nails a layup on a steal and Shaw has its biggest lead of 7 pts with 7:03 remaining.

Allen makes 2 FTs, the first time all game. Falcons trail by 6. Jack make an old-fashioned 3-pts play to give Bears a 9-pt lead.

Falcons can't buy a basket. Ball rolling around the rim and out.

Shaw's lead now at 10 with 4:09 left. Make that 12 after Verdine Warner's layup. St. Aug's had 21 turnovers.

Hatcher gives Falcons a 14-point lead iwth 1:50 left. Don't see Falcons coming back, and the streak continues.

Game over: 67-56.

McCombs led all scorers with 14 points, while Mitchell had 13 for Shaw. Neither team shot well – both were in the 30's. Difference is Falcons were 6 of 16 from charity line.

MEN'S GAME

Physical game already. Lots of running up and down but not much offense. Shaw leads 2-0 on Koron Reed's jumper. Wow, 14:34 left in the half and still just a 2-0 score.

Joel Kindred ties the game with 2 FTs, but Raheem Joliffe knocks down 3. Kindred hits 2 more FTs. Falcons trail 8-4.

Man, this game is nothing like the way the women started. Everybody looks bored.

10:31 left in 1st half and it's 8-4. Tashuan Stockdale hits SAC's first field goal with 9:13 left. Shaw leads 12-6.

Shooting has picked up a bit but not much. Shaw leads 20-14 after Falcons scored 4 str. points. 4 minutes left in half. Gym folks about sleep.

After trailing 20-10, the Falcons rallied to trail 25-22 at halftime.

Kindred and Derrick Hunter tied with 10 points. Kindred's 10 all came at the free throw line. The Falcons missed all five attempts from 3-point range.

We're starting the second half just iike the first. Neither squad can get the ball in the basket.

Joliffe is down after a hard foul sent him into the wall. Game is getting really physical. Still no one has scored at 17:16. Joliffe hits 2 FTs.

Shaw has its biggest lead of the second half, 29-24 with 13:50 left after Hunter's layup. Bears have extended their lead 35-26 as SAC just can't get anything going except free throws. But there's still plenty of time with 11:43 left. Shaw hitting the boards for second and third chance shots.

Just as it looked like SAC had some momentum, Shaw gets a steal and Reed slams it home for an 8-pt lead with 10:42 left.

Falcons are down by 5 with 9:39 left. Despite poor shooting, SAC can tie the game with Jonathan Crawley's FT. He misses but Falcons down by 1. Most points coming off free throws.

Shaw's Auil Younger has a bandage on his forehead the size of my head. How can he even see?

Falcons have had about 4 chances to tie or go ahead and haven't been able to. Joe Reid fouls out for Shaw with 1:34 left. Crawley hits 2 FTs to tie game with 1:34 left. First tie of second half.

Falcons win! Amere May's airball is caught by fjunior Tashuan STockdale who catches it in mid-air and turns for the winning basket.
