NCCU vs. NCA&T - 1/22

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 12:00:00 am

Forty-five minutes before the game and it is jammin’ up in here. Students are in the house as the women get ready to play. N.C. A&T women have won last 7 matchups against NCCU and haven’t lost at McDougald-McLendon Gym since 2001-02 season. Can the streak be broken?

So far its Khyra Conerly vs. A&T. Conerly has NCCU’s first 6 points in their early 6-5 lead. Conerly now has all NCCU's 8 pts. A&T meanwhile has built a 14-8 lead with five different players. Other Eagles need to start scoring.

Aggies playing good defense. Conerly being taken out of game. Must be tired ‘cause she’s the only one doing the scoring. Coach Vanessa Taylor trying to get others involved. Aggies lead 20-8 with 9:31 left in 1st half. Still no one has scored besides Conerly.

Finally, Tisha Dixon breaks the drought with 2 free throws. Jessica Freeman adds a 3-pointer to pull NCCU to 20-13. After Eboni Ross scores a layup, Freeman hits another trey.

Ross and Tracy King are keeping the pressure up for the A&T, however. Lead has built to 27-19 with 3:40 left. Eagles stone cold.

Aggies putting it on. Have scored 8 straight and lead 38-21. End of first half, 38-23. Eagles can’t do any worse in second half. They are as cold as the weather outside. Eagles shot 36.4%. Freeman was the high scorer with 9 points. Maybe they aren’t used to all these folks in McDougald.

DeAndra Davis’ short jumper puts Aggies up 42-23 at the start of the second half.

Eagles fighting back. Have pulled to within 12 with 7:02 left after trailing by as many as 19.

Freeman is down. Fans holding their breaths. Can’t lose her. Looks like a cramp.

Aggies holding on to their 11-pt lead with 4:50 left in game. McDougald is just about packed to capacity. Should be like this every game.

Raquel Davis’ putback pulls Eagles to within single digits and Conerly makes it a 7-pt game with 4 minutes left. Now we have a game.

Freeman just had a good look at a 3 that would have brought the house down, but it just rimmed out. 55-46 Aggies with 2 minutes left. Game over. A&T wins 59-47.

The joint is jumpin' up in here. This is what college basketball is all about. But there are a bunch of Aggies in the house too. Here's hoping to as good a game as the atmosphere. This contest should be on TV. There's no rivalry like Eagles vs. Aggies.

St. Aug's women defeated JCSU 64-57 and Shaw women beat Winston-Salem State by a gazillion points.

Both teams are cold from the field. The hype has gotten to them. Eagles lead 6-2 with 13:37 left in 1st. Aggies missed first 4 shots of game. Took almost 5 minutes before they scored.

LeVelle Moton just got a warning from an official: No more! No more! Moton giving him an evil eye. Eagles lead 16-13 wiht 8:16 left in 1st. Expect a warmup in the second half.

Aggies getting all their points at the foul line. Would lead if they could hit free throws. Just missed two straight front ends of a 1-and-1.

Did you know NCCU has a 16-game home winning streak going?

Emanuel Chapman just hit Jordan Parks for an alley-oop for a 23-15 lead. The crowd is going wild. Parks hits another layup and is fouled. Makes FT. Eagles lead by 11, their biggest of the game. Eagles on 12-0 run. Aggies can't buy a basket.

Elizabeth City State men upset Lincoln in 64-63 in OT.

Richaud Pack breaks the drought with 2 FTs with 1:51 left in the half.

Halftime: 34-17. Eagles go on 16-0 run before Pack's basket. Uh oh, tempers are flaring after a hard foul. Time out. 15:48 left. NCCU leads 44-25. Jerome Singleton has been ejected after technical.

Eagles flying away with this one. 51-25 with 14:50 left. Don't see a comeback in Aggies for this one. Signing off.
