Sports Samplings – 12/20

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 12:00:00 am

If you felt a strong wind across your face on Thursday, that was Shaw football coach Adrian Jones breathing a sigh of relief.

Since Chowan left the conference for everything but football, and with the addition of Claflin without football, there has been a misalignment. The Northern Division has five teams and the Southern Division seven teams for all other sports. That will change come the 2020-21 season. The CIAA announced on Thursday that Shaw will “relocate” to the North for all sports except football. How the Bears got the short end of the stick and not, say, St. Augustine’s, was not explained on the press release.

Regardless, Jones won’t have to worry about playing Bowie State, Virginia State and Virginia Union EVERY year – unless he wants to. Shaw is winless against Bowie State and Virginia State

under his tenure. The Bears haven’t played Virginia Union since 2013 when Robert Massey was coach.

It will be interesting to see how this change will affect the Bears-Falcons rivalry, if at all. When you’re just 5 miles apart, who cares what division you play in, right? Of course, rivalries are always better when teams are winning, and right now Shaw women (3-7) and St. Aug’s men (2-7) are pitiful.

Hampton wasted little time announcing its early signees on Wednesday:
