Sports Samplings – 10/24

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 12:00:00 am

See, win back-to-back-to-back championships and you get on TV more often. North Carolina Central will appear in three of the MEAC’s four televised ESPN basketball games next year:

  • Jan. 27, 7 p.m. – Florida A&M at Norfolk State
  • Feb. 3, 7 p.m. – Norfolk State at NCCU
  • Feb. 17, 7 p.m. – NCCU at N.C. A&T
  • March 5, 7 p.m. – A&T at NCCU
  • The men’s championship game live and the women’s championship game tape-delayed.

So the MEAC finally got a clue and decided to televise both games of the best rivalry in college basketball. ‘Bout time!

Couch potato: Three MEAC football players will be watching this Saturday’s game from the couch. Florida A&M’s Cameron Sapp and Jalen Braboy, and A&T’s Stephen Davis have been suspended for one game for their role in a fight during last Saturday’s thrilling matchup. Fortunately for both teams, their opponents are easily beatable.

ESPN3: The MEAC will have four games streamed on ESPN3 this weekend: Howard at A&T at 1 p.m., Delaware State at NCCU at 2 p.m., FAMU at Morgan State at 3 p.m., and the game of the week: S.C. State at Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m. Perfect timing, too. Virginia Union and Bowie State play at 1, so they’ll be about over by then.

Over in the SWAC, Jackson State at Prairie View at 7:30 p.m. tonight should be a good one. We’ll sneak a peek while we’re at the NCCU banquet. Then on Saturday, Alabama A&M at Alabama State on ESPN3 at 3:30 p.m. (our time) and shown tape delay on ESPNU at 10:30 pm.

Date change: The SWAC has changed the date of its 100th year anniversary gala to July 17, 2020, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, or should I say “Hotlanta.” National radio host Rickey Smiley will MC the event. Visit www.swac.org for more info.

John Wall Day: Washington Wizards star John Wall will have his jersey retired at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh during a weekend celebration November 1-3. Visit https://thelegacyball.org/john-wall-day/ for more info.
