Joel Hopkins leaves Shaw

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 12:00:00 am

Shaw men’s basketball coach Joel Hopkins has resigned.

“I want to thank coach Hopkins for all he has done to advance the Shaw University men’s basketball program,” athletics director Alfonza L. Carter said Tuesday in a statement. “We certainly wish coach Hopkins and his family all the best.”

Last season the Bears won the Southern Division and advanced to the CIAA Tournament championship before losing to Virginia State. They were picked to finish third in the division this year.

Hopkins gave Shaw its first men’s championship during his first tenure from 2000-2002. He also produced one of the greatest players in CIAA history in Ronald “Flip” Murray, who went on to have a stellar NBA career. He compiled a 43-15 during those three seasons.

“I want to thank chairman of the board of trustees,…” and more BLAH, BLAH, BLAH things coaches say as they leave, which they really don’t mean.

More to come…
