CIAA Media Day

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 12:00:00 am

Shaw was picked to finish third in the CIAA South – the highest preseason ranking in coach Adrian Jones’ tenure – but that still didn’t make Jones happy. “Predictions are made, we’re about results,” Jones said at Thursday’s CIAA Media Day. “We have a chip on our shoulder now.”

The Bears also had five preseason selections, but none more important that rising senior linebacker Devon Hunt. Hunt led the conference in total tackles and was voted defensive player of the year. “I don’t care what people say,” said Hunt, echoing his coach's sentiments about the ranking.

Rival St. Augustine’s was picked to finish behind Shaw at No. 4. The Falcons were within a field goal of advancing to last season’s championship game. Coach Tim Chavous’ toughest job this season may be meshing his completely new coaching staff. “We’re going to prove the CIAA wrong by picking us fourth in the South,” he said.

Defending champion Bowie State is the overall No. 1 seed, followed by Fayetteville State and Virginia Union rounding out the Top 3. The Bulldogs defeated the Broncos 30-10 in the championship game.
