Sports news & notes – 11/30

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 12:00:00 am

The finalists for the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s player of the year are Bowie State quarterback Amir Hall, North Carolina A&T defensive end Darryl Johnson Jr., Alcorn State QB Noah Johnson and Howard QB Caylin Newton. The winner will be announced on Feb. 16 during the HOF induction ceremony. Would hate to be on the selection committee. How do you choose?

Alcorn State dominated the SWAC postseason honors with 12 players named to all-conference teams. Leading the way were ASU quarterback Johnson, offensive player of the year; running back De’Shawn Waller, newcomer of the year; and Fred McNair, coach of the year. (It still pains to see McNair’s name without thinking of his brother, Steve McNair.) Other top honors went to Grambling State linebacker De’Arius Christmas, defensive player of the year, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff wide receiver Dejuan Miller, freshman of the year.
