The HBCU football season opens Saturday with a couple of games, most notably N.C. A&T vs. Jacksonville State in the third annual Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff Showcase in Montgomery, Alabama, at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Aggies were the only undefeated Division I-FCS team last season. Their last loss was to Richmond on Nov. 26, 2016. JSU leads the series 2-0. The other games are Prairie View A&M at Rice and St. Andrews at Edward Waters.

Packer fever

Southern High School graduate Akeem Judd (above) was recently signed by the Green Bay Packers. Judd had signed with the Tennessee Titans and the New York Jets before that but was released both times due to injury. He will wear No. 36 for the Packers.

More exposure

Hampton will have 24 athletic events streamed on the new ESPN+, which is the exclusive streaming home of the Big South Network. Fans can see 12 volleyball matches, six soccer matches  and all six football home games, beginning with Shaw on Sept. 1.

Welcome to our house

The MEAC now owns its headquarters building after paying off the mortgage this week, making it the only FCS conference to own its building. “We are very pleased with being 100 percent owner of our building, valued at over $1 million,”Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas said. “We have been very frugal in our expenses and were able to generate positive revenue. We were very fortunate not to have to assess our membership any fees in order to retire the mortgage on the building.” I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, people criticize Thomas but the MEAC is on the cutting edge.
