Cleo Hill Jr. continues legacy at WSSU

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 12:00:00 am

In an announcement that surprised no one, Cleo Hill Jr. was named Winston-Salem State’s men’s basketball coach on Monday. Hill rose above 103 other applicants to lead a program that his father, Cleo Hill Sr., helped make famous with teammate Earl “the Pearl” Monroe.

Hill’s official hire came on legendary WSSU coach Clarence “Big House” Gaines’ birthday and makes him the third N.C. Central alumnus to head a Triangle HBCU. Joel Hopkins at Shaw and LeVelle Moton at NCCU are the others.

More to come on my column later this week.

Cleo Hill Jr. Named Winston-Salem State University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Son of Ram and NBA legend earned four NCAA tournament berths during 12 years as head coach
