NCAA Division II playoffs

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 12:00:00 am

As expected, Virginia Union women earned the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Region playoffs. The Panthers will host the regional beginning Friday against No 8-seed Bowie State in a rematch of the CIAA championship that the Panthers dominated 73-57. The victor will face the winner of No. 5-seed Virginia State vs. Edinboro (Pa). The Trojans lost to the Bulldogs in the semifinals.

Over in the SIAC, Clark Atlanta earned an automatic berth after winning the SIAC championship. CAU will take on No. 1-seed Union (Tenn.).

On the men’s side, Virginia State keeps its No. 1 seed despite being upset by Virginia Union in the semifinals. The Trojans get a chance for payback since they play the Panthers in the opening round.

In the SIAC, Morehouse men also kept their No. 1 ranking and will host the South regional despite losing to Claflin in the semifinals of the SIAC Tournament. So when is the last time three HBCU teams were ranked No. 1. Joining the Maroon Tigers are Clark Atlanta and Claflin, who will play each other in the first round. Morehouse takes on Florida Southern. Men’s playoffs begins Saturday.

The games should be streamed on www.ncaa.com or the schools’ websites.

And if Division I is your thing, the MEAC Tournament kicks off on Monday. Games will be streamed on ESPN3. What a great week of HBCU basketball!
