Shaw vs. Virginia State

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 12:00:00 am

The Bears have lost three straight games – two without senior center LaQuisha Taylor who is not playing again tonight. Trojans have won two straight after losing two in a row to Virginia Union and Chowan. Nothing to cry about against those two teams.

Trojans jump out to a 8-0 lead, putting on full-court press early. Shaw hates to be pressed.

Newcomer Tahniya Sweatt finally ends VSU's 10-0 run with a basket.

Am I the only one bothered by a cheerleading group called the Chi Chi's (or however they spell it) and there's a guy on the team?

The last time VSU coach James Hill was at Spaulding, he was being inducted into the athletics hall of fame. Of course, hardly anyone knew since no press release was sent out to the media.

Lots of VSU fans in the house, but then it only takes 10 to fill up the visitors' side.

End of a 16-minute first quarter. VSU leads 18-11. VSU's Dionna Marcus has 7 of the 18. Sweat leads Shaw with 6 points.

On a different note, can't believe today is the 30th anniversary of Doug Williams leading the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 Super Bowl victory over Denver. Remember it like it was yesterday. And that now famous quote by an ignorant reporter: "How long have you been a black quarterback?"

The Bears are starting to heat up. Raquel Kellow nails a 3-pointer to pull Shaw to within 2 before Alexis Smith hits a short jumper.

Don't know why every team doesn't press Shaw. Two straight VSU buckets off turnovers to take a 29-20 lead with 2:42 left in half. Bears are relying on the 3-pointer to stay in the game. No offensive flow so far. Aja Robertson banks in a trey to make it 32-20.

End of half: VSU leads 34-21. Barely 30 minutes into game. Alexis Smith is the only player in double figures with 10 points. Shaw shot 30.8 percent from the field versus the Trojans 43.8 percent. Neither team could hit from beyond the arc; Shaw is 2 of 10 from 3-point range compared to VSU 3 of 14.

Chelsea Long's 3 pulls the Bears to within 7, but Shaw is missing more than it's hitting. Trojans lead 44-36. Alexis Smith still the only player in double digits.

Trojans just had five rebounds in one session to get a basket. Lead by 8 with 25 seconds left in third.

End of third: VSU 46, SU 39. Trojans have scored 26 points in the paint versus Shaw, and 17 points off turnovers versus five for Shaw.

Alexis Smith's 3 makes it 51-39 early in the fourth period.

Trojans making it look too easy now with 4:03 left. Alexis Smith makes it 61-41. Smith has a game-high 21 points.

Game over in just 1-1/2 hours. VSU wins 64-47. Lerven Johnson-Tyler leads Shaw with 14 points. The men are sure to be much better.

MEN'S GAME

Goodness, where did Lamous Brown from Shaw come from? He's 7-foot and just a sophomore. Bears jump out to 7-0 lead before VSU can break the drought. Savon Goodman's two free throws give Shaw a 10-5 lead. Despite low score, game is physical early.

Shaw shooting 57 percent from the field while the Trojans are at 28.6 percent. But we are tied at 10 after a 5-0 run by VSU with 11:38 left in half.

Tied at 12 with 8:54 left. Both teams shooting under 40 percent. Goodman puts the Bears back up 14-12, but Waymond Wright hits a 3-pointer to give VSU its first lead of the game with 7:48 left in the half. Not for long. Stephens-Bells free throw ties the game again at 15.

Bears score four straight off fast-break points to take a 19-15 lead. Bears on a 10-0 run to lead 25-15 with 2:37 left in half.

Lead at its biggest for Shaw at 11 with 1:07 left.

Halftime: Shaw leads 28-19. No VSU player is in double figures. Who would have thunk it? Goodman has a game-high 11 points.

This is one ugly game! Shaw has yet to score in the first four minutes and VSU has just three points to trail by six. Not anymore. Cyonte Melvin's layup makes it a four-point game.

Here come the Trojans. Trey Brown is at the line for two FTs. Makes 1. Misses 2. 28-25 Shaw leads with 14 minutes left. Another Bears turnover.

Stephens-Bell finally gives Shaw points in the second half. But VSU comes right back to trim it to 3 again.

Andrew Corum pulls VSU to within 1 with 10 minutes left. VSU had two chances to take the lead but Krishaun Myers puts Shaw up by 3 again.

But Lual Rahama ties the game with a trey, Nine minutes left.

Goaltending call on Shaw. Corum gets the basket and VSU gets the lead. 8:04 left.

Shaw has gone stone cold from the field. Calvin Giles gives VSU its biggest lead of 4 with 6:38 left. Myers hits a mid jumper just as the shot clock expired to trim it to 2 but Rahama kissed one in for 4-point lead again.

Stephens-Bell goes the distance and it's down to 2 for the Trojans. 4:44 left.

Cameron Golden Sr. ties the game at 40 with 4 minutes left.

Melvin going to the line with game still tied at 2:49 left. Makes 1 Makes 2. 42-40 VSU leads.

But Goodman slams home a two for the tie. This is the game folks came to see.

Myers is fouled. At the line shooting two. Makes 1. Makes 2. Shaw leads 44-42 with 1:50 left.

But Richard Granberry's putback ties it again. 1:23 left. But he fouls out with 1:15 left. Shaw's Lamous Brown at the line. Misses front end of 1 and 1.

Goodman is called for a foul and he fouls out with 56.2 seconds left. Melvin at the line. Misses front end of 1 and 1.

Shaw has the ball and 48.6 seconds left. Time out.

Bears miss shot. VSU has the ball and 26.1 seconds left.

OVERTIME!!!

Khaliq Williams at the line. Makes 1. Makes 2. 46-44 Shaw.

Wright kisses one in as shot clock expires. Game tied at 46 with 3 minutes left.

Melvin is fouled going to the basket. Kelsie runs out holding his hamstring. Looks like a cramp. Misses 1. Makes 2. 47-46. with 1:50 left,

Williams gives Shaw the lead with 28 seconds left. Wright's shot attempt is too long and Shaw the rebound. Stephens-Bell at the line with 4.7 seconds left. Makes 1. Makes 2. Shaw wins 50-47.

The win sets up showdown with Johnson C. Smith Saturday for first place in the division.
