VSU vs. St. Augustine's

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 12:00:00 am

Thought the women's game started at 6 pm but was just told that's only Shaw games. Game started at 5:30 but since students are out, no problem finding a park.

Falcons shot 54.5% from the field in the first period versus 46.7% for VSU. Alexis Smith is the game's high scorer with 8 points.

For those that didn't know, VSU coach James Hill Jr. was inducted into the Shaw Athletic Hall of Fame last month. And didn't even tell anybody. I'll take care of that.

Nice block by VSU's Chrisanna Green. Trojans have pulled out to 31-19 lead with 2:34 left in half. Falcons have scored just 4 points in the second period with 47 seconds left.

End of half: VSU 35, SAU 21.

No player has scored in double figures. Green has 9 for VSU; Kelsee Arnold has 8 for Falcons. VSU has a 12-4 advantage on offensive rebounds.

What's up with the new style of female players hitching up their shorts (below) in the front? Guess they're tired of the Michael Jordan look.

Trojans remind me of Chowan and Shaw women Tuesday night. VSU getting to the boards despite being a small team. Pesky, pesky.

Trojans defense has held Falcons to 5 points so far in third. Lead 40-26.

Falcons had scrambled to trim the lead to 9 but Trojans have come back with 6 straight points to lead 46-31 with 4:41 left in third.

SAU's Kaaliya Williams had a 33 straight free throw streak going and just missed her first FT of the season. Falcons turn to put on the pressure. But Williams nails a three to pull SAU again to 9. Now down to 7. Trojans starting to miss their FTs.

Falcons have upped their defense. Twice Trojans couldn't get a shot off before shot clock expired. Quiera Gilmore just scored and was fouled. Made FT. Lead down to 6 with 2:04 left in the third. But VSU's Keyana Brown comes right back with a layup and is fouled. Misses FT.

Keyana Brown just went up among 3 SAU players and pulled down a rebound with a putback. But here comes the Falcons. Sha'nia Leach's steal and layup makes it a 6-point game with 4.3 seconds left in third. But Mia Fitts is fouled. Makes 1. Misses 2.

End of third: 54-47 VSU leads.

Green is the game's high scorer with 13 but four Trojans are in double figures. Arnold and Williams are tied with 11 for the Falcons. SAU shot 64.3% in the third versus 21.4% for VSU. That'll get you back in the game.

VSU is still leading big in offensive rebound margin, 18-6, and has 9 more free throws.

Across town, Shaw leads ECSU 34-33 at halftime.

Williams just got her fourth foul. The Falcons can't afford to lose her.  SAU down by 7 with 6:50 left.

Game is getting hectic and VSU's Alexis Smith just fouled out with 5:26 left. Leaves with 12 points but defense was key too.

Falcons missed 2 FTs and Keyana Brown made them pay for a three to give VSU a 58-47 lead. Five-point turnaround. 4:28 left.

Sha'nia Leah just went down grabbing her left knew and writhing in pain. Being carried off the court by co-head coach Wyndell Holmes.

Game over: VSU (10-) 70, SAU (3-7) 58.

After shooting over 60% in the third, Falcons hit just 3 of 18 for 16.7%. Falcons were outrebounded 43-33, including 20-11 offensively. Mia Fitts was the game's high scorer with 17 points plus 11 rebounds. Williams and Gilmore tied for 13 apiece for the Falcons.

Falcons host ECSU Saturday and the return of coach Antonio Davis.

MEN'S GAME

It took less than 4 minutes for January to get his first dunk. Falcons lead 4-3. January had a 20-20 game against Catawba: 20 points and a career-high 20 rebounds.

In other news, Fayetteville State men hold on to defeat Chowan 72-71. Hawks have lost six straight.

Slow game early on. 10-8 Falcons lead with 11:40 left in first half.

Back-to-back 3-pointers have the Trojans ahead 14-10. And another dunk by January. Four points off two dunks.

Trojans 3-point shooting has them up 20-12 in a low-scoring game. 6:36 left in half.

But here come the Falcons with 7 straight points to pull to within 1 with 5:43 left in half. January has 6 points and 5 rebounds.

Looked away for a second and the Falcons have a 23-22 lead with 3:30 left. Would be a little larger if not for missed FTs. But Kasey Bryant makes 1. Makes 2 and it's a 3-point SAU lead.

End of half: SAU 28, VSU 27

January is on his way to another double-double with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Philip Owens II is the game's high scorer with 9 points.

Kasey Bryant's three gives Falcons biggest lead of 4 before Trojans scored to cut it to 2 at the beginning of the second half.

Waymond Wright nails a trey to tie the game at 32 with 16:16 left. We're gonna have a good one.

The Falcons on 5-0 run but Wright hits shot jumper to cut it to 3 with 14:38 left. Falcons always play VSU tough. Beat them in Virginia last season.

January hits the jumper just as the shot clock expired to give SAU biggest lead of eight. 13:50 left. Falcons are hot. Matching VSU jumper for jumper.

Lead now up to 10 on Quinton Morrow's jumper. Falcons defense has VSU out of sync.

Meanwhile, Shaw men are beating the stuffing out of Elizabeth City State. Up by 20 in the first half. But I've seen stranger things.

Falcons are on fire. Trojans can do nothing with them right now. Craig McDaniel's old-fashioned 3-point play gives Falcons a commanding 50-39 lead with 10:14 left.

January has 10 points and 9 rebounds with 9:31 left. Teammates Bryant and Morrow are tied with 10. No VSU player in double figures with 9:31 left.

VSU's Richard Granberry fouls out with 7:13 left.

January just picked up his fourth foul. A reach in where he should have never reached. 6:42 left. Calvin Giles at line. Makes 1. Makes 2. Down to 4-point Falcons lead with 6:40 left. VSU picking up full court defense. But Morrow breaks through for bucket. Back to six points.

You know you're going to win when Kenneth Collins banks in a long 3-pointer just as shot clock expires. 57-48 Falcons with 5:12 left.

4:36 and still a Falcons 10-point lead.

Falcons lead down to 6 with 3:18 left.

Philip Owens II nails a long trey to pull to within 6 with 3:04 left. Meanwhile Vikings have trimmed 20-point deficit to 14 against Shaw.

January just fouled out with 2:25 left. Scored 12 points with 10 rebounds.

Owens at the line. Makes 1. Misses 2 but Trojans get rebound and Owens hit 3-pointer. 66-64 with 2:05 left.

Rashad George gets a big rebound and putback to put Falcons up 68-64 with 1:28 left. Time out.

Lincoln men beat Smith 96-89.

After back and forth, Trojans Andrew Corum at line down by 4 with 39.3 seconds left. Misses 1. Misses 2. But VSU gets the ball back. Bryant steals the ball and takes it in for a layup to make it a 6-point lead with 31 second left. Trojans Cyonte Melvin fouled and at the line. Makes 1. Makes 2. 70-66.

Bryant at line. Makes 1. Makes 2. Back to 6 with 28 seconds left.

Trojans miss 3-pointer and fouls Harrison. Makes 1. Misses 2.

Second straight year Falcons knock off Virginia State. Some teams just match up well with others. No more undefeated CIAA men's teams. Final is 73-66.

Bryant finishes with 16 points. Owens is the game's high scorer with 17 points.
