Sports news & notes – 10/20

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 12:00:00 am

ESPN will showcase a big MEAC matchup between N.C. A&T and Bethune-Cookman Saturday. The game will live stream at 1 p.m. on ESPN3 and shown tape-delayed at 10:30 p.m. on ESPNU. The Aggies (8-0) are the only undefeated conference team, while Delaware State and Savannah State are still winless. (Bet SSU can’t move down to Division II fast enough.)

Two conference teams have defenses ranked nationally in the top 10: A&T is at No. 3 and S.C. State at No. 8. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs record doesn’t reflect how good a defense it has. Hampton is No. 13. The MEAC office has yet to officially announce the wildcard TV game on Nov. 18, but we all know who it will be, don’t we?

And speaking of ESPN, Celebration Bowl tickets are now on sale for the Dec. 16 game in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, thecelebrationbowl.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Prices range from $50 to $175. Visit the website for a list of events.

Most SWAC teams have an open date, however the SWAC Digital Network will broadcast Alcorn State at Grambling Saturday at 3 p.m. EST. The game will feature the SWAC’s top two quarterbacks. ASU’s Lenorris Footman is first in yards passing with 210.3 per game, and Tigers QB Devante Kincade is second with 194 ypg.

On the other side, Kincade is tops in passing efficiency (140.4 rating), just edging out Footman who is second at 140.0. Alcorn running back DeLance Turner is No. 1 in FCS in rushing with 788 yards. A&T’s Marquell Cartwright is fifth with 698 yards. Both teams have four-game win streaks and are undefeated in the SWAC. Should be a good one.

Virginia Lynchburg will travel to Mississippi Valley State for homecoming. Should be a dud.

In case you missed it, the SIAC signed a multiyear agreement with ESPN to live stream some of its football games and the SIAC championship game. Tomorrow’s matchup is Albany State vs. Clark Atlanta at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.

So, let’s see, I’ll have the Aggies/Wildcats game on my phone, Fayetteville State and St. Augustine’s fighting for first place on one computer and a third laptop to browse around the rest of the leagues. Yep, shaping up to be a good Saturday afternoon.
