Sports news & notes – 9/29

Posted by: Editor-Bonitta Best on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 12:00:00 am

Light week in the MEAC this weekend. One of three games was played last night between N.C. Central and Florida A&M on ESPNU. Savannah State and Bethune-Cookman meet on Saturday. On paper, this looks like an easy match for the Wildcats, but the Tigers upset B-CU last season. And N.C. A&T travels to South Carolina State. The Aggies will be seeking their fifth straight win, while the Bulldogs will try to rebound from blowing a 14-point lead to the Eagles.

Did you know: Howard’s win over B-CU last Saturday was its first over the Wildcats since 1996. The Bison, who host NCCU next Saturday, have not started 2-0 in the conference since 2012, and haven't won two straight games since 2014. And speaking of rivals NCCU and A&T, they are the only conference teams with winning records. November 18 can’t come soon enough!

A change is comin’. A new format was announced by the CIAA regarding the tournament this season. A team – usually the No. 6 seed – will no longer have to play five consecutive days to get to the championship game. Tuesday is the same with four women and two men’s games, but Wednesday changes from two women and four men to four women and two men. Thursday’s change is from two women and two men to all men (four teams); then it’s back to semifinals on Friday and championship on Saturday. Got all that? The tourney will again be split between Bojangles (Tuesday and Wednesday) and Spectrum Center (Thursday-Saturday). Wear plenty of clothing 'cause baby it gets cold down on that Bojangles floor.

SWAC: Alcorn State senior running back De’Lance Turner almost set a new single-game rushing record against Southern last week. Turner ran for 272 yards – second-best in program history. He is sixth in FCS in yards rushing (444) and fourth in yards per carry (9.6 per game).

Only one major TV network game this weekend: Albany State vs. Miles at 7 p.m. on Aspire TV. As always, many games are live streamed on teams’ websites. I’ll be attending Virginia Union at St. Augustine’s and also watching Shaw going up against Elizabeth City State. Best of both worlds.
