Sports news and notes, 9/15

A doozy of a non-conference matchup on Saturday is North Carolina A&T at Charlotte. The No. 20-ranked Aggies are 2-0, while the 49ers are seeking their first win. However, Charlotte is a FBS team whose losses have come against bigger FBS schools, including Kansas State. Plus, one of A&T’s wins is over Division II Mars Hill. The last time the Aggies played in Charlotte was 2008 in the Aggie-Eagle Classic. They lost to N.C. Central 28-27 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. A&T is 1-4 against FBS teams. The game at 6 p.m. will be streamed on the 49ers website.

Two other MEAC teams are taking on FBS opponents: Morgan State at Rutgers and Bethune-Cookman at Florida Atlantic. Conference play starts next Thursday when NCCU hosts S.C. State for an ESPNU contest.

Over in the SWAC, Jackson State travels to Grambling in an ESPN3 matchup at 7 p.m. The game will be shown tape-delayed on ESPNU at 10:30 p.m. The G-men lead the conference in sacks with five. But the biggest draw so far has been Jackson State. The Tigers are averaging a league-best 45,058 fans per game.

Alcorn State QB Lenorris Footman is No. 1 in passing efficiency (134.4) and yards passing per game (226.5), but is also fifth in rushing (79.5 ypg).

Other ESPN3 games are Alabama A&M at South Alabama and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Arkansas State, both at 7 p.m.

The SIAC has a new NFL representative with former Albany State standout Grover Stewart, who made the Indianapolis Colts 53-man roster. Stewart totaled 141 tackles (90 solo), 27 sacks, five passes defended and two forced fumbles in his collegiate career. Oh yeah, the Golden Rams have moved up to No. 16 in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll.
